now you don't...
I think that was the catch phrase for the Chipsmore advert some time ago. Well it seems to apply to my life. I was in KL up until Sunday and now find myself back in Ningbo.
Things happened really fast after a decision that was made even faster when David found out that visa restrictions were lifted and we could obtain a 30 day visa. We were packed and ready to go within a week. It was a daunting task trying to pack for Micah - his things filled up one whole suitcase and basically all my baggage allowance. It was a good thing that David traveled light and I could use his baggage weight.
The nightmare was really the hand carry luggage. I have a new DSLR camera which was bulky and heavy and also my computer and when you add all Micah's milk bottles and diapers and everything else needed for the long day of traveling, I felt stressed even before leaving the house.
To top it all off, a lot of things went wrong. First the taxi didn't show up. It was 5.30am but thank God my mom and sister were awake to send us off - they ended up sending us off to the airport! Phew! What a save.
Then Micah did all the things we were dreading - puked and pooed. Have you tried changing a baby's diaper with poo while feeling air sick?! Don't try to imagine...for your own sake! Somehow I managed and survived.
But I have to say that despite the ordeal, we've encountered a few nice things about traveling with a baby. People are so nice to us! The airport security almost waved us through and we met a really helpful AirAsia staff at the check in counter. David and I were seated separately because we booked our tickets at different times but to our surprise, she called us back and arranged for us to sit together. What a stroke of blessing.
Then the stewards and stewardesses on board were helpful and friendly. We even got a bassinet for Micah. We happened to be seated at the emergency exit but in the middle making it possible to have the bassinet.
And there was this really nice lady who followed me to the toilet and offered to help me change Micah! What a great gesture but I refused her help to save her the unpleasantness and also because we both can't fit in the toilet!
Then at the immigration at Hangzhou, the moment the airport personnel saw us with a baby, they guided us and let us jump queue - the people behind were so understanding. It was a good thing that we didn't have long to wait since I had to carry him (they couldn't get the stroller out of the plane immediately after landing) and Micah pooed again and the smell was getting unbearable to me!
Micah was not very fussy and could easily be appeased with this toy my sister gave to him. He kept 'talking' and cooing to it. He was an extremely good baby throughout the flight and even when we had to take a 2 hour taxi ride from Hangzhou airport back to Ningbo. I pray this is a sign that he will travel well because we will be doing quite a bit of traveling with him before the year is out.
We survived our first flight with a 3 1/2 month old baby. We shall find out how we fare when we travel by plane with him at 4 1/2, 6 and 7 months!

Hi Tracy, welcome back to China, you survived your first trip with little Micah, congrats! Hope you can now put that DSLR to good use!
It looks like you already planned your next trips in the months ahead! Remembered travelling with our dawn when she was just a baby and she cried the whole cabin down! Thank God it was only a 2 hours flight!
Once we took Paul's grandma out in a wheelchair and we got to jump Q's and people, even people with small kids would jump out of our way to let us through. I was so shocked! I plan to take her with me everywhere I go now, hahahahaha!
